Artificial Turf Moss Removal & Mini Court Restoration

Moss commonly develops on artificial turf in shaded, damp or poorly draining areas, particularly on backyard basketball courts, mini courts, putting greens and older artificial turf installations.

Over time, moss and organic buildup can make the surface look neglected, retain moisture, restrict drainage and create slippery areas.

TurfGlo provides professional artificial turf moss removal and surface restoration using commercial power-brushing and vacuum-extraction equipment.

Our process removes embedded moss, debris and organic matter while lifting and grooming the turf fibres.

Mini Court & Basketball Court Restoration

Artificial turf courts can gradually become compacted, moss-covered and difficult to maintain, particularly around shaded edges, basketball rings, fence lines and areas where water collects.

Our restoration process is designed to improve the entire surface, not simply treat the visible moss.

We mechanically brush and extract moss, organic buildup and embedded debris, lift compacted turf fibres and groom the surface to create a cleaner and more consistent finish.

Benefits

  • Significant removal of visible moss and organic buildup
  • Improved drainage and surface drying
  • Reduced slippery or moss-covered areas
  • Lifted and groomed artificial turf fibres
  • Cleaner and more presentable playing surface
  • Extended usable life of the existing turf
  • Practical alternative to premature turf replacement
SERVICE PROCESS

Our Moss Removal and
Restoration Process

We follow a proven 5-step process using professional equipment and techniques to restore your artificial turf to its best condition.

01
📋

Surface Assessment

We inspect the turf condition, drainage, shaded areas and the extent of the moss growth before recommending the most suitable approach.

02
🧹

Commercial Power Brushing

The turf is mechanically brushed to loosen moss, compacted debris and organic material embedded between the artificial turf fibres.

03
🌀

Vacuum Extraction

Loose moss and debris are extracted from the surface rather than being brushed into surrounding areas.

04
🪚

Detailed Edge Work

Fence lines, court edges, corners and difficult areas are treated separately where larger equipment cannot reach.

05
🌱

Turf Grooming

The artificial turf fibres are brushed and lifted to improve the overall appearance and help the surface dry more effectively.

Why Remove Moss From Artificial Turf?

Moss is more than a cosmetic issue.

If left untreated, it can continue spreading across the surface, hold moisture within the turf and contribute to slippery or poorly draining areas.

Professional moss removal can:

  • Reduce slippery surface areas
  • Remove buildup restricting drainage
  • Improve airflow through the turf fibres
  • Help the surface dry more quickly
  • Improve the appearance of older artificial turf
  • Reduce the likelihood of severe recurring buildup
  • Improve the usability of courts and play areas

When Is the Best Time to Remove Moss?

Moss is most likely to develop during cooler and wetter conditions, particularly on shaded courts, putting greens and artificial turf with limited drainage or airflow.

For the best long-term result, TurfGlo recommends two key maintenance periods.

🍂

Before Winter

An autumn or pre-winter maintenance service removes leaves, debris, organic build-up and early moss growth before damp winter conditions allow moss to become heavily established.

  • Prevents heavy moss growth
  • Clears leaves & organic debris
  • Ideal for shaded courts & turf
  • Reduces future restoration work
💡

Booking before winter helps prevent moss, while booking in late winter or early spring delivers the most complete restoration.

Dry Conditions Produce the Best Result

The artificial turf must be fully dry before mechanical moss removal.

Dry moss is easier to loosen and extract from between the turf fibres.

We generally require approximately two to four dry days before the scheduled service, depending on:

  • Shade
  • Drainage
  • Surface condition
  • Recent rainfall
  • Time of year

Recently wet or heavily saturated turf may require the service to be postponed until suitable conditions are available.

Can All Moss Be Removed?

🌿

The result will depend on the age of the turf, drainage, level of moss growth and how deeply the moss has established within the surface.

Our commercial brushing and extraction process will generally remove the majority of visible moss and organic buildup.

Expected Result

Our process can remove up to approximately 80–90% of moss where appropriate. This is an expected result rather than a guarantee.

Severely affected or damaged areas may require additional treatment, turf repairs or replacement.

TurfGlo will explain the expected outcome before beginning the work.

Do not expect that all moss will be completely removed.

How Often Should Moss Removal Be Completed?

For most artificial turf areas, one professional moss removal service each year may be sufficient.

For heavily shaded mini courts, basketball courts and recurring moss-prone surfaces, TurfGlo may recommend:

  • A preventative clean before winter
  • A full restoration in late winter or early spring

Regular maintenance helps prevent moss and organic matter from becoming deeply established and can reduce the cost and difficulty of restoring the surface later.

Why Does Moss Keep Returning?

🌿

Moss may return where the underlying conditions remain unchanged, including:

Heavy shade
Poor drainage
Limited airflow
Nearby trees and vegetation
Damp soil surrounding the installation
Leaves and organic matter remaining on the surface
Low-lying areas where water collects
Recommendation

Where appropriate, TurfGlo may recommend regular brushing, improved drainage or scheduled annual maintenance.
